So it is on rare occasion that we head out to do something in San Diego. Other than are normal grocery store, library, and 24 hour fitness routine. The semi-routine weekend jaunts to Oceanside to hang with Josh and Jessica. However, a random glance into the paper last night and a reasonable cover charge has us heading up to Solona Beach for the highly entertaining Cody Chesnutt. I highly recommend checking out his only album, The Headphone Masterpiece for anyone who doesn't know him, which is most of you I'm sure. Cody's biggest claim to fame is one of his songs, "The Seed," being rerecorded by The Roots with him singing, appropriately titled "The Seed 2.0." Cody's music is, as I believe he describes, neo-soul mixed with rock and roll a dash r&b and a good sprinkling of acoustic guitar. Cody is performing with Martin Luther, another soul / r&b singer. There is some opener who I am not going to bother to mention, but may choose to edit the post if they are good. This concert is sure to be entertaining and sensual at what is toted as the best venue in SD, Belly Up. Peace y'all.

EDIT: So it turns out Cody Chesnutt found like women and children and God and is less cool now. He was still highly entertaining and dressed like a fool but I lost a lot of the sexy ideal I had for him. He also stated multiple times through the night he was only going to do new stuff. Myself and the few other people in the audience urged him to do a couple of his classics but it was to no avail. He was very receptive to the audience coming down to be with people. I hugged him and took a pic with him. Below is a video of Martin Luther who he performed with. Martin Luther was hit and miss with the songs. Two things I hate about live shows. 1) "Alright random person on guitar or bass, let me hear a solo." This leads to moderately impressive solo which is always kind of meh. 2) Fake encores, they might as well just call it a set break or an intermission. If a crowd really wants it come out and play more, otherwise just do your job.
I went back and filled in some content on 3 posts I had just made as place holders. Yes I still have more media to upload and writing to do but it is a lot of work. Pretty please click some links on the side here and help support me. I've clicked on a few and they aren't as spammy as I thought they might be, some are good information or links to good pages.

Enjoy watching videos and reading about how to shower on the road. You might like to take a visit to this site if you are interested in computer networking. By the way apparently I'm now a spam whore.

Well I suppose it has been a few weeks since my previous post in the Las Vegas airport (aka my hotel for the night, grrr). I went home to Athens and spent a very nice 10 days there. Seeing friends, family and loved ones as well as being there for the religious union of Matt Handley and his wife Megan. Apparently they did the legal marriage thing like a month before but oh well. The wedding was a great time and Athens was very pleasent as to be expected. Congrats to Matt and Megan. Also, congrats to George's friend Zuber and his wife. George coincidentally attended Zuber's wedding the day after Matt's and was gone about the same amount of time less his fun in Vegas.

Also, congrats to George’s friend Zuber and his wife. George coincidentally attended Zuber’s wedding the day after Matt’s and was gone about the same amount of time less his fun in Vegas. For those curious, the van rested at the Las Vegas airport long term parking.

All seemed well for our return but once again, my travel luck kicked me in the ass. My flight out was delayed by 10 hours by the way and I missed my return flight due to a 2 hour traffic lock in Nelsonville as a result of downed powerlines. I was put on standby status for a couple flights, which I luckily made both of and ended up landing in Vegas 3 hours after I was supposed to. Not to shabby if I say myself. Denver has a baller airport btw for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

All seemed well, we reconveened around midnight PST which sucked b/c we both came from EST which put us at 3am. The tentative plan was to drive toward the ocean, since it was cool but it was a solid 4-5 hour drive to LA. Shit, we’ve done worse though so lets try.

First step, fill the tank right? Not so easy. The Vegas heat had split this fuel tube that goes from the gas pump into the tank so as I began to fill the behemouth tank, gas began to spill on my feet. I stopped the pump and let out a mighty “fuck.” Okay, lets see what we have in the tool box. Lets see what the gas station. Ponder. Ponder. See picture to understand the solution. None the less it was about an hour to two hour delay.

So we get the tank filled and push out into the night. I was pretty worthless, George was driving and I was fading quickly. I had dozed and a woke to George pulling off the highway possibly muttering something about almost driving off the road. I think we needed coffee to make this work. We ended up just passing the hell out right on the side of the highway in a little dirt lot, not awoken until around 8am the next morning by the sun. We still aren’t sure what time we fell asleep but I’d have to guess between 3-4am. I didn’t even bother getting out of the passenger seat and George kind of just flopped onto my shelf.

So its now hot, and we are in the desert. Completing the plan of getting coastal immediatly took priority. After reviewing our location and the map of L.A. we decided that the city of Irvine (to which we attribute knowning of the city due to Blizzard’s HQ being there). Turns out Irvine is freaking awesome as far as suburbs go. A very intelligently designed burrough with lots of green space. We quickly found UC of Irvine where we set up roots in their libraries for three days. Of course there were 24 hour fitness in the area (one we learned closed at 9pm, seriously WTF).

Our brief sebaticle to Irvine ended with a plunge inland to Corona and its Men’s Suit Warehouse where George obtained a very slick suit a great price. A hair cut later and man does this boy clean up. Now armed with the tools for his interview tomorrow we came back down into the SD area after the suit was altered. Checked out UCSD campus, which is awesome as to be expected with its evil super villain library. Hunger and coffee drove us into La Jolla, which spit us up and chewed us out. Having tentative plans for laundry we came down to PB where we knew where the laundrmat was. Do some laundry drink some pints, park the van, PB library and its deja vu from a month and a half ago. So we are back in PB today. Miramesa for interview tomorrow for Care Fusion. Everyone cross your fingers for George.

I shall leave everyone with this visual reminder of who we be.

Another drinking weekend to Oceanside

Well like clock work we headed back to Oceanside for our fourth weekend in a row drinking with Josh and Jessica. This weekend however we had more plans than just shots in the appartament and possible rambling. It was time to see some nature in the SD area and head inland about 45miles to what is known as La Jolla Indian Reservation Campground. What promised to be a simple day of some boozing and hanging out in the river turned out to be a bit more than we bargained for, in a good way.

First of all I have camped many of times. I have camped by myself in the middle of the woods. I have car camped at campgrounds big and small alike. Never in my life though had I witnessed a campground like this. Not even in the biggest most RV haven of a national park. The Indians who run this place have it figured out. Why bother spending a ton of money on a casino when so many people are in the business. You have to hire staff, make a huge investment, and run a very large complicated business. Plus you need to some how figure out what your swagger or theme is that is going to set you out. Instead this tribe decides, hey we have a river. Lets just pave a 5 mile road, throw a couple shitty bathrooms out there, and rake in these suburban fools dough. There easily had to be 1000 cars here. Some orderly packed away and others chaotic. At $25 a car you do the math, thats $25,000 and they had what looked to be about 3 people working the gate and a few guys emptying trash cans / cleaning the restrooms. Then to add the revenue stream, they rented tubes for $10 a day. Had a gas station with some expensive ass goods and gas at the entrance, and charged $5 per person over 4 in a car. Smart natives these are.

So now that you know all about the economics of this camping trip, let me say it was very fun. Its rare to have a natural, fresh water source like the river at the campground, this definitely attributed to the masses as most camping opportunities in the SD area revolve around sitting in the desert. George and I managed to down 3 bottles of wine by 2pm. We created a ridiculous game where anyone saying the word shot, had to take a shot. Needless to say this is one of Josh’s catch phrases, so he lost the game. We were graciously accepted into some of our neighbors camps. After drinking in the river for a while and helping to launch tubers down past our bend we slithered our way down stream eventually meeting an overtly Mexican fellow by the name of Jerry. Jerry was very amused by our company and continued to give us Vodka, which no one should shoot and he seemed to have his niece trained to give us cold beers as soon as the one ran out. Jerry then said it was food time and cooked us huge steaks. After consuming all this delight I promptly passed out for a couple hours when the rest of the gang ran a muck. As I awoke, Josh went down and tapped me in and I continued the party with George. We had met a couple of Mom’s who husbands passed out and were happy to find people awake to drink with. We played some cards and killed another 3 bottles of wine. George set his hammock up and I cowboy camped. We were both enthralled with the experience of being out of the city which definitely came into play with our future decisions.

Not of having the healthiest day before we headed back into Oceanside we had a very lazy day. George napped some as he head managed to procure the heftiest of hangovers. Josh napped, and I chatted online with Maggie for a long time. It was nice to be back in the ocean breeze as the rising desert heat drove us out to start with. The following day we did the library dance, in between 2 various Oceanside libraries, then I went and held up in a Coffee house and got some work on my Cornell project done. Throughout the day and previous we had been discussing what to do with the week and the future. The plan forever had been to go to ComicCon on Thursday and try to sneak, trick, con, dance, ninja our way into it. After doing some web crawling it became apparent this may have been a bit of a fools errand. Couple this with the nature charged fire from the weekend of camping and a decision seemed to be looming on the horizon. Largely coffee drive, in a swift and characterful momment of decisiveness I declared that we would be leaving San Diego that night and heading toward San Bernardino and the National Forrest of the same namesake.

The only dilemma weighing on my conscious were the SD Public Library books in my possession. Oceanside being in the North County was out of the same system as the normal library. What could we do? Possibly con Josh into taking them down at a later date? Mail them? Renew them online for all eternity? George decided renewing into oblivion was right for him, but I knew I wasn’t going to read either of these books and I wanted the monkey off my back. I decided to pit the love of knowledge and literature against the system that said it wouldn’t work. I returned the books to the wrong library with an overtly passionate note, wrapped in a lie. Apparently it worked because it shows I have no books checked out on my account. Woot! Thank you to all the libraries we have visited for they have been very good to us. A plastic bag, a note, and my two books were deposited into the libraries slot. I felt almost as if I was giving away a baby to hopefully what would be a good home. After this we hit up the gym for work out and a delayed post camping shower, and drove off into the night.

See the note I left and the screen cap from the SDPL library showing it worked!

You have been a good home for the month we spent together. You are pretty. You have wonderful beaches. But baby, you just aren’t right for me.

Hotter temperatures and a trip to Oceanside to visit friends pulls the nomads away from inland and SDSU campus. New beach discovered - Ocean Beach - by us, other people already live here. Time closing in on what could be San Diego part one, or just another step in the leg of the nomad journey. Will come back and pull up the tent stakes in San Diego, or push north to the Bay Area or even Oregon.

Past: So I had been told that temperature drastically rises as you move 10 or even 5 miles away from the coast… guess what it is true. Our week inland at SDSU was productive but overall it has been deemed lame. Lame for these reasons. 1) As I said, its hotter, there is no coastal breeze, and it is slightly more humid. 2) Its basically like in the suburbs around the campus. 3) Although getting into a routine was moderately productive for the week, it seemed bitter to be waking up and doing the same thing in the morning, afternoon and night. For four straight days we bought breakfast at Albertson’s (grocery store), followed by 6-8 hours at the SDSU library which is really cool, then to 24 fitness for night work out till around midnight, then fast food dinner because 24 grocery stores don’t exist here.

Present: Well as of now, this is our 3rd night sticking it out in Ocean Beach (OB). It is my favorite community I have seen thus far. It is similar in feel to Pacific Beach but picks up many cool points in the facts that it doesn’t have all the crazy commercial chains around the beach, doesn’t have anywhere near the tourists and douchey guys, and it feels more diverse. It is also closer to the downtown which I am not sure which is a plus or a negative. OB is on the south side of Mission Bay as to where PB is on the north side.

Ocean Beach has all the standard things we look for in a vannomad community. 24 Fitness, coffee shops, library, and grocery stores. Big announcement also for a Van Nomads San Diego first, a 24hr grocery store has been located. It is Ralph’s and it is very close to our gym (easy walking distance). For anyone not in the know, Ralph’s is just a rebranded Kroger and our Kroger cards work here too. Woohoo for not having to get more cards and for not throwing away my Kroger card when I almost did. OB also has the longest pier on the US Pacific coast. I walked down it today and saw the sunset, very relaxing. It is a surfer community that hasn’t been swept up in the present day city crap like many other parts of the city. We also both applied for a job at a comic book store that was hiring and is only two blocks from the beach. Pretty much a retail dream job.

Monday we had our first legitimate going out to eat a meal since we have been in San Diego. Went to an awesome Japanese restaurant called Sapporo which was located on the same street as the comic book store. It was a great atmosphere, delicious, and very affordable. It was a transcendent experience after lofting about on foot for 45min being uncertain where to partake in the ceremonial dinning experience.

Future: Not sure what is ahead. The realization that we have 10 days before we head out for our respective weddings draws near. Congratulations to our friends Handley and Zuber who are both to be wed (not to each other but to their individual ladies) on August 1st and 2nd. Possible camping or concerts in the works for this weekend. Hopefully some library time tomorrow. I’m going to make like a hare and bounce. As the rabbit says “That’s all folks.”

A random drive yesterday after a very uncomfortable public library by our Balboa 24 Fitness found us near SDSU. We figured internet and places open late would be in this area. Its looking to prove to be pretty solid as we spend the day at the university library and George digs his head into the stacks. I'm finding myself productive being surrounded by similar aged people getting work done. The campus is very pretty and I just found that we have a 24 Hour Fitness and a Walmart extremely close by. Couple that with the very good wifi at the coffee house that is open until 2am that we patroned last night and it looks like we may have found a new home.

What do you do when you want to be a clean homeless person? Let me break down some of the options.

Option 1: Clean yourself with wet naps, baby wipes, wash up in sinks in bathrooms.

Option 2: Visit truck stops and pay a fee of anywhere from $2-$10 per shower. Expose yourself to whatever may be in truck stop showers -_^

Option 3: RV parks, campgrounds, and some hotels will also get you a shower. These are more inconsistent and definitely not a very viable option in a city.

Option 4: Combination. Take a shower when you can.

Option 5 ( The best option): Become a gym member. Gym memberships range in variety but what do they have showers, sinks, and shitters. People don’t look at you weird if you take a shower after working out, and people most likely won’t notice if you just head in take a shower and peace out.

The question soon becomes what gym do I select. Hard bodies? Globalgym, Average Joes, LA Fitness. I have no idea

how other gyms work but I know how one very awesome gym works and that is 24 Hour Fitness. For just $30 a month (yes there is a $10 initiation fee and you pay one month out in advance so it is really $70 off the bat) you get an awesome gym membership, that just happens to be open 24 hours. Here is the kicker though, your membership allows you to visit any of the over 300 24 hour fitness. There are even some international. In San Diego alone there are approximately 30. We have visited probably 1/3 of those. They range in what they offer - some of basketball court, pools, racquetball - but what they all have is cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, and locker rooms.

You can’t beat that price, that portability, or the fact that by wanting to be clean you most likely will inadvertently get in better shape. There are classes and free personal trainer sessions and some more jazz but I like to keep it simple.

Only downside of it is group showering, which is something neither George or I were blessed with doing in our younger years. I can say one thing though when I see a fat old hairy ass I react much more differently than I used to.
